Stanley Robinson Loeb, of Portland, died peacefully on October 28, 2019, in the company of his wife of 59 years, Joyce Loeb. He was 86 years old.
Stan was born in 1933 in Brooklyn, NY, to Clarence and Bessie (Robinson) Loeb. A lifelong lover of reading and learning, he graduated with honors from The Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ; Harvard College; and Harvard Law School.
Between College and Law School, he spent three years serving our country overseas, as a Lieutenant in the US Coast Guard.
He moved to Portland in 1960 to practice law with the firm of Koerner, Young, McCullough, and Dezendorf (later merged with Lane Powell). His practice focused on Estate Planning. He took pride in being able to comfort families in times of distress, and to be his client’s advocate when they could no longer advocate for themselves. He chaired the Estate Planning Committee of the Oregon State Bar, and also was a member of the Washington State Bar.
Stan was very active in the Jewish community. He belonged to Congregation Beth Israel, served on its board, and served as President from 1975-1977. He also dedicated more than two decades on the board of the Union of Reform Judaism, the organization responsible for Reform congregations in North America.
He was a member of the Multnomah Athletic Club, which he visited almost daily for decades, enjoying both exercise and friendships. In later years, he was an avid member of the club’s swimming community.
Stan was kind, honorable, and principled. And to his last words, he retained a gentle, teasing sense of humor that surprised and delighted everyone around him.
In the last two years, Stan was so fortunate to be supported by the most thoughtful caregivers. He treasured his friendship and the kindness of Isaac Moreno-Newton, and also the caring from the entire family at Touchmark in the West Hills.
In addition to his wife Joyce, he is survived by his sons, Carl Loeb (Allison) and Eric Loeb (Pamela), his brothers, Daniel Loeb and Andrew Loeb; his three grandchildren: Claire, Eli, and Liv; and a loving, extended family.
His memorial service and interment will be at the Beth Israel cemetery on Thursday, October 31, at 11:00 am. The family also welcomes friends to join them for shiva and a reception at Congregation Beth Israel in Northwest Portland that evening, at 6:00 pm.
