Paul Phillip Johnson – He went to meet our Lord & Savior on January 19, 2020 in Portland Oregon
Paul was born in Minneapolis Minnesota on April 17, 1927 to Olof and Pella Johnson. His family migrated to the United States from Sweden before he was born. Olof came ahead of his family to America. His wife Pella crossed the Atlantic later with their 3 young children. Paul’s siblings were Linea Ingeborg (Pat), Margarita Harta (Margaret), Helge Olof (Harold). Paul was born in America.
He graduated from Robbinsdale high school in Minneapolis. Paul was quite an athlete. While in high school, he played football, basketball and track. He also skied, ice skated and was quite the roller skater too – many times he was asked to leave the ice and roller skate rinks because he was going quite fast!
After high school, Paul served in the U. S. Army. He served from December 1945 to November 1946. His basic training was in Camp Hood Texas – now called Fort Hood. He served as a tech 5 in the 340th engineer group and he drove a 4-ton truck while building the Kimpo airport in South Korea. (this airport is still in usage)
Paul returned home and asked Mary Ellen Gavic to be his girlfriend. He carried her picture with him while he was overseas. While still in Minnesota they attended one of the first Billy Graham Crusades and both went forward to accept Christ as their Savior.
Mary Ellen’s family moved to Portland Oregon. Shortly after she moved to Portland – Paul followed her to Oregon. They married in May 1948 in Portland Oregon at the Willamette Blvd. EUB church.
Mary Ellen and Paul settled in Portland. They raised two sons – Jim and Dan. (Sadly, Dan preceded Paul in death) Paul worked as a mail carrier and retired after 37 years. Jim married Charlene and Dan married Michelle. Paul and Mary Ellen sold their home in Portland and moved to a small farm in Ridgefield Washington. During that time their family enlarged. Four grandchildren were added to their family. Brad & Stacy, and Jason & Jamie.
When they sold their farm, they moved to Sunriver and lived there for twenty-three years. They now have added 3 great-grandsons to the family – Jack, Joe & Josh to the family.
Eventually they moved back to Portland and have recently been living in a nice senior center. Recently Paul was diagnosed with cancer throughout his body. He stayed at home with his loving wife Mary Ellen until his passing – We love him and miss him – We rejoice in knowing that he is with his Lord…
