Patricia A. LaMetre
1938 – 2019
Patricia A. LaMetre passed away in West Linn, Oregon on December 15th at the age of 81. She lived with Parkinson’s Disease for the past 16 years. She was born in and grew up in Palo Alto in 1938. She lived her adult life in Menlo Park until she moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon in 2008 to be near her daughter Julie and her family.
She was a graduate of Palo Alto High School. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper for long-time friends and neighbors who owned Ace Hardware in Menlo Park, and later worked at Palo Alto Hardware. She shared 35 years of marriage to Frank M. LaMetre, who died in 1997.
Growing up in her family’s Palo Alto produce business, Pat was an avid gardener and cook. She enjoyed entertaining friends and family in her Menlo Park home. She enjoyed music and loved to play the piano, ranging from classical pieces to Broadway musicals. Pat was involved in Julie’s elementary school as a volunteer for the Las Lomitas Annual Spring Carnival and was President of the PTA. She was a member and officer for 67 years of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, a philanthropic organization focused on education and sustainability issues and the preservation of historical California Missions and other landmarks.
Pat is survived by her daughter, Julie Walvatne (Gary); grandchildren Stephanie Isbell (Ryan) all of West Linn, Oregon and Scott Mertens of Phoenix, Arizona; and step-grandchildren Maia and Jackson Happel-Walvatne of Wilsonville, Oregon. She will be missed by her sister Shirley Svindal (Jerry) of Santa Clara, nieces Jeanette Olvera (Tim) and Laura Svindal, a great niece, three great nephews, and multiple generations of cousins.
Pat’s family requests that any donations should be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, to support Parkinson’s Disease research. Her family would like to thank the medical team at Oregon Health and Science University for their support in managing her illness. Pat’s family also wishes to thank Ileana Ivan of Victorian Elder Care in West Linn, Oregon for her loving care of Pat for the last five years.
Services will be held on Friday, January 3 at 12:30 p.m. at the chapel at Alta Mesa Memorial Park, 695 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto.
