Michael George Merriman

August 29, 1929 - July 31, 2019

Michael George Merriman spent 35 years as a Jesuit priest and was once a principal and later President at Jesuit High School in Beaverton, Oregon.  Being a Jesuit provided Mike an influential foundation in his life.  Following his years as a priest, he married Margaret Dickey and became a member of her family.  It was significant for Mike to be a part of what was important to Margaret, that is her children, Matthew, Stephen, and Deedee.  For a time, Mike and Margaret lived in Seattle where Mike worked at Mason’s Supply.  Continuing to nourish his spiritual life and help people, Mike became a hospice chaplain.  Margaret worked as a fund raiser for non-profits throughout the Northwest.

After Margaret retired, their dream was to live at the Oregon coast.  They bought property at Roads End, Lincoln City and Margaret’s son, Matthew, designed the house in which they lived happily for 11 years.  During this time, Mike was involved with hospice and formed grief groups.  Throughout his years with hospice and grief counseling, Mike felt that this was his spiritual calling.

Due to Margaret’s failing health, they moved to Portland to be closer to medical resources.  It was at this time that Mike reconnected with his Jesuit roots at St. Ignatius Parish where he was involved in giving Ignatian retreats and spiritual direction.  He was also instrumental in forming a men’s prayer group.  With another Jesuit, he gave an 8-day retreat for the Jesuit infirm community in Spokane, Washington.

Mike was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and it became a more significant part of his life as the years went on.  Even so, he continued to be involved with spiritual life.  He moved into Mary’s Woods and his friendships grew as he progressed throughout different living quarters and situations; his smile became known to all.  It is because of these friendships that he chose Mary’s Woods as his funeral place.

Mike claims that all that he is, intellectually, spiritually, materially, socially, is due to his years as a Jesuit.  He died on the Feast of St. Ignatius.  Mike will be buried at the Jesuit Cemetery in Spokane.  Margaret is buried with the Benedictine Sisters at Mt. Angel.
