LBel McCormick was born May 29, 1916 in Stanton, Iowa to Guy and Celia (Thompson) McCormick and passed from this earth on May 22, 2019. Growing up in Stanton was something LBel loved to talk about to those who knew the area and the Swedish community of Stanton. She was proud to be an Iowan and from Stanton. LBel especially enjoyed hearing from the children of her friends and appreciated visits and letters. LBel was confirmed in the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in 1927, and graduated from Stanton High School in 1934. LBel worked as a telephone operator in Omaha for awhile at Immanuel Hospital. During WWII, LBel enlisted in the Women’s Army Corp on March 9, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa, and served our country proudly. She was stationed in San Antonio, Texas at Randolph Field working as a radio operator.
Upon leaving the Army, LBel moved to Portland, Oregon where she worked for Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company as a claims adjuster. She was transferred to San Francisco, California, for 14 years until her retirement at age 65. After retirement, LBel moved back to Portland Oregon. She was active in her church, The Apostolic Faith Church, where she taught Sunday School for 43 years. When LBel could no longer attend church, she would faithfully listen to services on the radio. She loved the music in the church and enjoyed attending concerts.
In her spare time, LBel was a knitter. She knit many sweaters for the Guideposts Knit for Kids project and was featured in their magazine. She taught others to knit and kept a record of all sweaters sent to the project for children all over the world.
LBel lived independently until age 99 when she moved to assisted living. Always independent, LBel never drove but walked or used public transportation. In retirement LBel enjoyed traveling, visiting many states and countries. LBel enjoyed playing games and thoroughly enjoyed playing with younger people.
