June Helen Porcelli

September 30, 1929 - September 30, 2019

June Helen Porcelli passed away on her 90th birthday, Monday September 30th, 2019 surrounded by her children and their spouses.

On September 30th, 1929, June Helen Dunlap was born in Portland, Or, the only child of Earl and Helen Dunlap. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1947, moving on to work as a bookkeeper for Greyhound Bus Lines until May 1955.

June was introduced to Lee Porcelli at a New Year’s Eve dance in 1952. Shortly thereafter, the couple married at St. Phillip Neri Catholic Church on September 6th of that same year. They spent their honeymoon on a road trip to California in Lee’s brand new Pontiac. Upon their return, the couple settled into a house owned by Lee’s parents in Southwest Portland where they raised their four children: two boys and two girls.

Bookkeeping for Greyhound came to an end in May of 1955 when June became a homemaker until 1963; it was that year that she and Lee purchased the Beverage Ice Company, an ice vending machine business, to supplement their income. June helped bag ice while also working as the bookkeeper for their company. A few years later, they bought Koldkist Ice and combined the two names into Koldkist Beverage Ice Company, moving the company from their neighborhood to a bigger factory located on NE 37th and Broadway.

Since the ice business was seasonal, Lee and June bought Housewarmers Oil Company in 1978, keeping them equally busy during the winter months. Housewarmers Oil quickly grew into one of the biggest home heating companies in the Portland area. The success of both companies caused them to out -grow their NE location, providing them the opportunity to purchase property on Columbia Blvd. that included an already existing cold storage business in 1986. They added on to the cold storage building with a brand new packaged ice factory in 1987 where they would continue to grow into one of the largest packaged ice factories in the Pacific Northwest. They later sold the home heating business in 2004 and replaced the cold storage business in 1995 with a bottled water company, Koldkist Bottled Water.

In 1981, June completed a course in Financial Management and Control for Business, and in 2003 she was awarded Businesswoman of the Year from The National Republican Congressional Committee’s Business Advisory Council. She continued working as the bookkeeper for their companies until her retirement in 1990.

Lee and June both loved dancing, especially to big band music. They took dance lessons at the Elk’s Club and were members of the Laurelhurst Dance Club for many years. They also loved to travel. Their travels took them all over Europe (Italy 3 times), Russia, and they went on 15 cruises that included Mexico, Alaska, the Bahamas and the Panama Canal. June had a passion for collecting owl art -work and statues from all over the world because she believed they protected her and her family.

She enjoyed playing the piano and organ, board games, scrabble, cards, bingo, reading and swimming. She also was a member of a bowling league and The Italian Women’s United President for 3 years. June had a great sense of humor and enjoyed having lunch with friends and family.

Lee and June proudly celebrated 50 years of marriage in September 2002 at the Portland Marriott Hotel surrounded by 300 of their closest family and friends. The celebration included

a renewal of vows, dinner, and dancing the night away with the George Reinmiller Big Band.

June was a loving mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother. She is survived by her four children: Virginia Hayter (Rick), Maryann Scully (Shaun), Jim Porcelli (Mickie) and Charlie Porcelli (Anne) and six grandchildren: Ricky Hayter, Shannon Hayter, Dominic Porcelli, Addison Porcelli, Vannessa Azeredo and Nicolas Porcelli. She also had four great grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.
