Joel G. Moore

August 25, 1945 - October 31, 2021

My love Joel G. Moore “slipped the surly bonds of Earth” on October 31, 2021. Joel passed unexpectedly at the  VA Hospital in Portland Oregon following surgery, from an embolism to his lungs. Joel shared his intellect,  kindness and unique ability to grow community with his wife and best friend Claudia Moorad for 31 years. They  married in a private garden wedding in Modesto California May 12, 1990 surrounded by beauty, family and  friends. Their children were four legged rescues and included dogs Bo, Pepper, Calvin and Grace. Cats led by  Dascious, Tigger, Blacky, Patches and Missy, Bunny Bandit and squirrels Rocky and Roxie. Joel was an outdoor  enthusiast hiking, and photographing special places like Five Waters in the Trinity and also Sierra Nevada  Mountains. Joel and first wife and friend Lorna McLeod loved Humboldt and made it their home, where our  community remains today. Joel’s eldest sister Jean Crook survives him in Mountain View California, brother  Dennis Cholez and Ginny live in Kelseyville, CA and he is predeceased by parents Josephine and “Tex” Moore,  William “Bill” Barnett and wife Helen Rue Moore, sister Leona “Jane” Colleen Moore and brother Jerry Leory  Bell. We hold dear each of Joel’s siblings and their children. We treasure the love we share with our nieces and  nephews. Joel and Claudia were blessed by ‘Mom’ Lois McLeod gracing our wedding and life together as second  Mom for Joel, and the McLeod family clan.

Love and intellectual curiosity motivated Joel’s desire and ability to grow community across diverse spectrums of  his life. Joel’s love of flight was fueled by his service in the Air Force. His passion for the engines of planes also  showed up in a lifelong loving knowledge of classic cars. When the Charcot foot condition that persisted for ten  years and ultimately took his life forced him to use a knee scooter, he could be seen bent over a Triumph at a car  show, knee on scooter kicking tires with friends. Joel’s good friend Bob Garrison recalled Joel was a student of Herb Caen and the SF Chronicle. He was regularly found at Stanton’s Coffee Shop reading the column. In  Portland Oregon Joel expanded his knowledge with friends in Craft Beer hosting rides on the Portland Beer Bus,  and attending the Craft Brew Festival with Claudia designated driver. Mike Florio Air Force ‘brother’ with the  same birth date and year as Joel recalled in recent years Joel continued to use his intellect by sending articles on  mutual interests and asking Mike what do you think of this? Air Force buddy William Harper acknowledged Joel  was a few months older and was considered the “old man” of their group. Joel attracted a growing squad of Air  Force brothers who fulfilled Joel’s lifelong dream, and attended the Wright Brothers 100 Anniversary in 2003.

Joel graduated with his Business Degree from the University of San Francisco, completing a Bachelors degree he  began at College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University. He specialized as a Small Business  Development manager and consultant throughout his career. Joel and Greg Gehr who now serves as Executive  Director at Northern California Indian Development Council Inc. developed and operated the Small Business  Entrepreneurship Program in the eighties for the Hoopa Tribe’s Manpower Program under the direction of Terry  Coltra. The program was later moved to Redwood Community Action Agency’s Community Development  Division under Bob Garrison. Joel was hired and moved to Modesto CA to dynamically lead the Stanislaus  County Small Business Development Program. He launched the program in one weeks time, growing small  businesses. Joel said the other reason he moved to Modesto was to meet Claudia and marry again. Their lives  grew together in Portland Oregon while photographing, hiking, biking loving each other and animals together as  they’ve explored the Oregon they’ve grown to love. Joel was emerging as a professional writer in his ‘third act of  life’.

In his own words “Joel G. Moore is an emerging independent writer with diverse interests and  extensive business, management, Economic and Business Development experience. He engages  in research and writing on a comprehensive range of themes from philosophical perspectives, like  Victor Frankl’s; ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’ to business management, economic development, and  essays about justice and the human condition.

He is skilled in the hard sciences referred to as SMET; Science, Math, Engineering and Technology  having been raised in a family of engineers who participated in the early development of the space  industry. On these issues he often invites the reader to engage in “future-think.” He challenges us to  consider the social, political, economic and ethical consequences of our individual and collective actions. He often wraps the hard dialog of the tangible world in the soft cocoon of our  psychological, philosophical and social being. Joel’s style of writing reveals his expertise, and his  deep understanding of the life of projects and people. He communicates his understanding and  perspective with humor and wisdom. Joel G. Moore”
