Joan Elizabeth Saso

November 18, 1927 - December 6, 2019

Joan Elizabeth Saso passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family and caregiver, Teddi on Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. She was 92 years old.

She was born on November 18, 1927 to Katherine Marie Smith and Charles Herbert Smith. She graduated from Commerce (now Cleveland) High School in 1945 and went to work as a stenographer for the Soil Conservation Service, HUD and the Oregonian. On May 16, 1953, she married Charles David Saso. They had four children, Jean, Kathy, Nancy and David.

Joan was a kind soul who was always there to help anyone who needed her. She was always interested in her children and grandchildren’s lives. Everyone who knew her loved her. Joan was an intelligent, kind and caring person who was interested in the world around her. She was an ardent liberal Democrat, rooted for the underdog and gave generously to causes such as sponsoring children overseas, environmental groups (especially anti-nuclear and climate change) and animal rescue groups. She adored the many cats she had over the years including Boots, Shasta, Blackie, Star, April and Tina.

She was also a life-long sports enthusiast. She played softball on a team in high school. Her favorite sport was bowling. She relished knocking all the pins down and yelling, “Strike” at the top of her lungs.

Her family thanks her loving caregivers, Teddi, Ericca, Catrina, and Beth for the wonderful care they provided to her mother in the final year of her life.

Joan is survived by her children, Jean Saso, Nancy Saso, Kathleen Markes, David Saso, grandchildren, Chris Markes and Michelle Castillo, great grandchild, Lola Castillo and her two sweet cats, April and Tina.

A recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday, Dec 20 at 10:30 AM followed by Mass at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 7525 SE Cesar Chavez Blvd, Portland. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary cemetery in Portland. All who knew her are welcome to attend.
