Jane “Demetra” Carandanis passed away peacefully in her family home on June 19, 2023 surrounded by her family. She is survived by her older sister Smaragda “Merle” Booras, her husband Perry, her two sons Theo and John (Cheri), and her two grandsons Noah and Demetri.
She was born on May 23, 1941 in Athens, Greece, to Ioannis and Kalliopi Stavrakis. She was one of four children which included her older brother Peter, older sister Merle, and her younger brother Jim. After World War II, she and her family emigrated to the United States through Ellis Island, New York in 1951 at the age of ten aboard the Nea Hellas. After arriving in Portland, Oregon, she graduated from Washington High School and married Perry Carandanis on December 28, 1961. Jane gave tirelessly to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral community and her family. Her sixty-one year marriage to Perry, raising her two boys, Theo and John, and being a yiayia to her two grandchildren, Noah and Demetri, was the joy of her life. Everyone that ever met Jane was filled by her love and acceptance. Her hospitality and kindness will be remembered by countless lives that came across her path. May her memory be eternal.
