In Loving Memory of James Andrew Heard
March 26, 1998 – October 3, 2019
Andrew Heard, beloved son of Esther Yip and Jim Heard, passed away peacefully in his sleep in Portland, Oregon, on October 3, 2019, at age 21. Andrew was a talented musician and song-writer, who co-founded and played lead guitar in the Portland rock band Sweet Sister.
Andrew attended the San Francisco Friends School from K-8, graduated from the Bay School of San Francisco, and completed his sophomore year at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, before taking time off to pursue a music career.
Andrew had a lifelong passion for music. At age 6, he would sit on the couch with the remote and play “Ripple” by the Grateful Dead over and over. That song sparked his desire to play the guitar, which really blossomed at the Friends School, where Andrew developed his love of performing on stage through playing in the school’s jazz band.
Andrew’s other early passion was soccer, which he loved to play, read about, and watch. One of the highlights of his life was sitting in the stands at Old Trafford and watching Manchester United (his favorite team) mop up the field with Arsenal (8-2). Andrew played on the Bay soccer team all four years of high school, and was co-captain his senior year.
As he entered college, Andrew returned his focus to his music, playing in other bands before forming Sweet Sister. After his sophomore year, Andrew took an indefinite leave from college to devote full time to Sweet Sister, which played regularly at clubs in Portland, and had recently performed in Seattle and San Francisco as part of their West Coast Tour.
Andrew found his passion playing with his band before a live audience. He was smart, talented, had a wicked sense of humor, and was also kind, thoughtful, and compassionate.
Andrew is survived by his loving parents, Esther Yip and Jim Heard, his beloved girlfriend, Cait O’Sullivan, his grandparents Susan Yip and James W. Heard, and numerous loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A celebration of Andrew’s life will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at the Bernard Osher Great Hall, San Francisco Zoo, Sloat Boulevard and Great Highway, San Francisco, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
