H.A. “Bob” Roberts passed away January 20, 2019 in Portland, Oregon. Roberts was the past president of Western Wood Products Association, headquartered in Portland. The association serves lumber manufacturers in the 12-state western states with lumber quality control, marketing and business analysis.
A 1951 forestry graduate of the University of Maine, Roberts worked for the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine and the U.S. Forest Service before joining Western Pine Association in 1954. When WWPA was created in 1964, Roberts was named secretary, became WWPA vice president in 1967, and president in 1972. He retired in 1991.
Roberts was recognized as a leader in establishing a revised American Lumber Standard in 1970. Beginning in1968, he served as a member of the American Lumber Standards committee. In 1970, he was appointed to the National Lumber Grading Rule Committee that established the first-ever National Grading Rule for all softwood lumber.
Active in building Western Lumber markets at home and abroad, Roberts served as a member of the U.S. Department of Commerce Lumber Advisory Committee on Foreign Trade, Chairman of the U.S./Japan Lumber Trade Promotion Committee, and was the traditional leader of the U.S. delegation to the annual European Softwood Conference.
Roberts is survived by two daughters, one son, and seven grandchildren.
