Harriet Stanton Myers died peacefully in her sleep the morning of November 13, 2019. She is survived by her children, Diane O’Dell, Nancy Myers, Robert Myers and Gary Myers, as well as 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was born March 1, 1928 in a mine-company town in the mountains of Idaho where she continued to live in the 30’s and 40’s. In 1945, her family moved to Portland, Oregon so her father could work in the shipyards. She graduated from Lincoln High School and lived in Portland through the late 40’s and 50’s. She met a former Marine, Richard (Dick) Myers, they married and had 5 children together. They suffered the loss of a baby son, David, to SIDS together. Then Harriet suffered the loss of her beloved husband in 1963 and had four children, ages 3, 5, 8 and 10 to raise on her own. Harriet and the kids also enjoyed several dogs and cats along the way, in addition to various birds and hamsters!
Harriet was a very strong and active person. She was active in the Atkinson Grade School PTA, a member of the Lincoln Street United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, she bowled on leagues, played Bunco with the same group for decades, took up painting, volunteered for the Red Cross (received a 20 year commendation from them!), Meals on Wheels and OMSI.
Harriet owned and enjoyed her beach cabin at Nedonna Beach for years. She and her husband bought the property together and he started building a cabin on the property. Unfortunately, he died before completing the cabin, but with the help of friends, it was finally completed and the family spent many happy days there. We expect she is now walking on the beach with Dick, Bo, Jake, Buttons and Flopsy (the last four of her dogs).
Visitation will be Saturday, November 16, 2019 from 9 AM to 4 PM at Holman’s Funeral and Cremation Service.
A private funeral will be held on November 22, 2019 at Willamette National Cemetery.
A celebration of Harriet’s life will be held at Diane O’Dell’s home at noon on Friday, November 22, 2019.
