Grace Betty Boersma

March 25, 1931 - December 23, 2020

Grace Betty Boersma, 89, of Portland, entered her eternal home with her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, December 23, 2020.  She was born March 25, 1931 in Martin, South Dakota to William and Hilda (Zwaan) Roozenboom.  Grace was a woman of deep faith and related verbally that from the time she was a child she loved Jesus and never questioned God’s love and sacrifice on the cross for her. She lived her faith each and every day by quietly loving those around her with her acts of service and gift of mercy.  She cared not only for her children but also for her grandchildren, the homeless, the elderly, missionaries, church parishioners, and so many more.  Her loving spirit was often noticed by those she came in contact with and always, she brought the attention back to God. She prayed and prayed for all those she knew!  Hospitality, sewing, and cleaning were hobbies of hers along with teaching children’s Sunday school, gardening, and lots of church involvement. Family was important to Grace; they were always her biggest hobby.  She was a loving wife to Bob, mother to 6 and grandma to 15. She was the eldest of 11 siblings.

Grace and Bob met in high school, dated for four years, and were wed on July 10, 1951.  Bob and Grace lived and worked in Luverne, Minnesota and Sioux Falls, South Dakota until 1958 when the family, now with two sons, Cliff and Ron, moved to Portland, Oregon. Two daughters, Carolyn and Lorraine, were born in Portland. A job opportunity for Bob came in 1968 which moved the family for four years to Omaha, Nebraska, during which time their son John was born. In 1972, Grace and Bob moved back to Portland where their son, Phill, was born, completing the family.  Bob and Grace built a home in 1975 and enjoyed living there until their dying days.

Grace would have asked that all praise and glory be given to God for any successes or attention to her life. We thank God for her life, love, and example!

Grace is survived by 6 children, Cliff (Cathie) of Redmond OR, Ron (Judy) of Belgrade MT, Carolyn (Rich) Ladd of Tumwater WA, Lorraine (Steve) Carson of Skamokawa WA, John (Krista) of Big Sky MT and Phill (Carolina) of Mill Valley CA; 15 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 6 siblings, Greta (John) De Wit of Brandon SD, Leo (Joan) Roozenboom of Oregon City OR, Lawrence (Linda) Roozenboom of Brandon SD, Jerry (Judy) Roozenboom of Brandon SD, Don (Carol) Roozenboom of Montivideo MN, and Dee Alexander of Omaha NE; 1 sister-in-law, Dora Steffen of Hills MN and 1 brother-in-law, Lee TeSlaa of Rock Valley IA.  Grace was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Robert “Bob”; an infant son; her parents William and Hilda Roozenboom; 4 siblings, Henry, Willard (Arlene), Pearl (Dennis) Geiken, Violet TeSlaa and an infant brother; 1 brother-in-law Bill Alexander.
