His love of birds began at an early age when he would watch the California Quail at his home in a small rural community near Lebanon, Oregon. His mother gave him the Peterson Field Guide and the bird world opened for him.
Although he traveled the world, his North American birding life list alone impressively contained 621 species. During his two years in the Peace Corps in India, his travels to every country in South America, and his four excursions on the Trans-Siberian Railway taking him to most European countries gave George an additional 257 species to his total world life list.
George was a lifelong journalist, a regular on the Jim Lehrer show, a Pulitzer Prize juror, and an advocate for freedom of the press around the world.
He will be missed so very much, but the memories of his sharing his birding knowledge and his kind and gentle soul will remain always.

I was born and lived in Roseburg, Oregon the first 18.5 years of my life. My Grandfather and Grandmother, Jesse and Mazie Neavoll, lived in the country near Lebanon, Oregon -- about a five hour drive on the then two-lane Highway 99 North. My first memory of George, who was about seven at the time, was that whenever my family arrived at the Neavoll ranch, George would leave and go into the nearby woods. At that young age, he would frequently return with a feather, an unusal rock, or other nature related object. He seemed to feel most comfortable in Nature rather than a social gathering. Coming from humble beginnings, George became a world traveler, a kind friend, and a talented writer / newspaper man. During my 80 years, we kept in touch and he is sorely missed. I am comforted, however, knowing he is with his nine brothers and sisters, Mother and Father, and Laney in that faraway place commonly referred to as heaven.
