Frederic Harold Weiss

Born February 4th, 1933 San Francisco, CA

Died February 6th, 2020 Portland, OR

Fred & Norma Weiss gave their children a great childhood growing up in middle class Sunnyvale, CA.  Dad loved kids.  The neighborhood always thought highly of him; he was considered the best and funniest dad because he was nice to all he met, had an incredible sense of humor and was a fun-loving man.

He over came a lot in life and found success in the meat industry.  He started out in San Francisco as a teen sweeping the sawdust behind the meat counter at a small meat shop at the top of the block near where he lived.  From there dad became a butcher and then manager of the meat department in a grocery store chain.

Eventually he graduated from manager, moved to LA and became Vice President of Marketing at Aries Prepared Beef in Burbank where he remained for 38 years until he retired at the age of 81. Many people attended his retirement party, traveling from all over the states to honor him and his service to the company and the industry.  Dad was always humble about himself, but at the retirement party, his peers expressed just how knowledgeable and the important role he played as a person alongside the people he worked with and the meat industry.  Many people paid him compliments and praised him for his wealth of expertise. He knew more than anyone they knew about meat and every part of the cow.  He collected all types of small ceramic cows. When Elle and her partner Sherri, moved him from LA to Portland to be closer to them, they moved his large cow collection too.  He told them he didn’t have a place to put his cows and asked if they could take them.  Of course they said, “Yes” and relocated them into the garage where they remain, lined up on a shelf starring back at them.

When people asked him what he did for a living he would tell them he is an MD.  They would ask, “What type MD are you”? Dad would say with a big smile on his face I am a Meat Dealer.

Dad would like to be remembered and honored as a good son to Francis & Sidney Weiss, a wonderful Father to Elle and Jaye, a fun cousin and a dedicated and loyal husband to his second wife Rose Vorgan Weiss, a good step-father, and a loving step-grandfather.

Fred spent the past 11 years of his life talking to his daughter, Elle, several times a day, seeing each other regularly, spending Jewish holidays and birthday’s together. They were very close.  The father-daughter bond they had was a gift, full of precious memories. He will remain always in our hearts.

God Bless him in Heaven as he was on Earth.
