Ellen Starr Pollens nee Kimball was born on May 31, 1939 in Pittsburgh, PA, to Estelle and George Kimball. She was an only child. She graduated from North Miami High School, class of 1956. She graduated from the University of Miami in 1962 with a degree in Communications and Film.
Co-host of a local children’s show “Popeye Playhouse” at Miami’s WTVJ during college, Ellen became an on-air talk radio host and part of the production team of NBC’s “Tonight” show in NYC. She worked in sales, marketing, advertising and publicity positions for large companies. Ellen hosted her own daily radio call-in talk show at WIOD (Miami) and later at WEEI and WMEX (Boston). Her extraordinary talent enabled her to break ground in 1972 as the first full time woman radio talk show host on air in Boston.
She married Peter Rabow in December 1963 and they had two children, Linda (Cohen) and David (Rabow). After her divorce from Peter she moved to Boston where she met and married Allen Pollens who had three children of his own Michael, Karen and Cindy. Allen and Ellen moved to Portland, Oregon from Boston, Massachusetts in 1998.
She loved classical and jazz music and was a lover of words and the English language. She was a warm, caring person and it is a tremendous loss to her husband, other family and friends. She leaves behind her husband, her son and daughter and four grandchildren.
Memorial Service will be at West Hills 8470 SW Oleson Road, Portland, Oregon 97223 on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 10am, Minister Sarah Schurr officiating.
