Burton Allan Stein passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 12th, 2019 after a lengthy illness. Burt is survived by his wife Barbara, two daughters, Carlye and Nichola, his grandson Evan, his sister Betty Reiss, brother-in-law Jacob Reiss, and two nieces, Rebecca Reiss and Jessie Kerstetter. He was born on May 18, 1948 in Riverdale, New York.
Burt was a brilliant builder and designer, handyman extraordinaire, and avid gardener. He was incredibly intelligent, could speak knowledgeably on just about any topic, and had a searing wit. He lived a full life in which he did a variety of interesting things including Fuller Brush man, sous chef on a naval ship, and taxi driver in New York City. He graduated early from Washington University and worked at Aspen Ski Resort in Colorado before settling into the role of architect/contractor in San Diego. He touched many lives along the way.
Burt met Barbara and her two daughters in San Diego while he was restoring a gorgeous, English Tudor-style house built in 1910. His intention was to sell, but in the end, he made it a home for his new family–a wonderful example of his love for them. Burt’s passion for food, and cooking and tasting new recipes, came second only to his passion for his family. He took on the role of new (adoptive) father with enthusiasm, a sense of humour, and his whole heart. Burt’s daughters and nieces said of him that when they spoke to him, he truly listened; if he gave insights, advice, or opinions, it was always without judgement. He was a loving and devoted husband, and all of our lives were richer for his presence.
He was strong-willed and stubborn, yet so very gentle and kind. He faced his illness and the decline of his body with courage, humour, and a positive outlook that those who witnessed his fight found extraordinary. People would often comment that were they in Burt’s place, they would not have faced such a difficult road with Burt’s strength and grace.
Burt will be deeply missed. His family and friends will remember him each day, and he will be in our hearts forever.
