Yvonne Rose Ennis passed away suddenly from heart failure on Sunday, February 18th in Vancouver, Washington at the age of 89. Yvonne’s life was filled with love, family and faith. Yvonne was born in 1928 in Oakland, California to John and Jennie Laplagne. Prior to and during the Depression, her father worked for Mother’s Cookies and was fortunate to keep his job throughout those difficult times. The world would change for the worse when WWII started in 1939. Always interested in history, Yvonne followed the struggle around the world and its history with interest then and the rest of her life. After the end of the war, Yvonne started working at Mother’s Cookies as a bookkeeper from 1945 to 1951.
On October 8th, 1950, she married William J. Ennis from Chicago, Illinois in California. William was a US Navy Veteran who had entered the war at the very tail end. All six of Yvonne’s children were born in the next 13 years while her husband worked for the Langendorf Bread Co. William was transferred to the Portland bread plant in 1968 to become plant manager so Yvonne packed up the family for the move to Portland on her 40th birthday. Yvonne continued to raise her children, struggling on a tight budget while providing a good home with nourishing, delicious food for her family. She eventually worked for Langendorf Bread herself in 1969, working and managing several of their bread thrift stores until her retirement from the Franz Bread Co. in 1990.
Yvonne divorced in 1979 but her faith in God never wavered. Faithful from childhood, she was the first person in her family to start attending the Catholic Church and her mother joined her shortly after. Yvonne raised all her children to attend church and live good, faith-filled lives. Her children grew to become a business man, a nurse, a police officer, a media/electronic industry worker, a graphics art designer and a firefighter with all enjoying successful careers.
As with all lives, success and tragedy entered her family’s lives but her faith in God and her children was always strong. Yvonne lost one of her children, Mary, to cancer in 2014, which greatly hurt but her faith kept her grounded through daily prayer and the Rosary. She lived peacefully the remainder of her life until her passing. She is survived by her son William, daughter Catherine, son Timothy, son Jean Philippe, son Gregory, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and many extended family members. Yvonne will be greatly missed by all. She was a great mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to all.
A Catholic Mass is scheduled on Feb. 27th at 10 am at St. Rita Church located at 10029 NE Prescott St. Portland, Oregon 97220 with reception to follow. She will be buried at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery in Clackamas County near Sunnyside Road.
Donations can be made to either St. Jude’s, Dornbecker or Providence Children’s Hospitals in Yvonne’s memory.
