Scott J. Gustafson passed away with family at his side Monday July 3, 2017 at the age of 49. He was born February 12, 1968 in Portland, Oregon, the son of Edwin L. and Barbara J. Gustafson.
Scott exhibited the love of cooking and the kitchen at an early age. His family has fond memories of Scott, pushing a chair up to the stove so that he may stir the sauce.
When Scott was 7 years old, he arrived home early from school one day. Finding a turkey in the refrigerator, he decided to cook a complete dinner for his family, vegetables and all. He just knew what to do. Dinner was a little late that evening, but it was very good.
Scott graduated from Centennial High School and Clark College Culinary Arts Institute with degrees in cooking and baking. He was certified as a chef by the American Culinary Foundation at age 18. At that time, very few chefs had been certified at age 18. None had ever been certified at a younger age.
Following graduation from Clark College, Scott worked 28 years as a chef at the Oregon Convention Center. He achieved several accomplishments while working at the convention center. He cooked at least one meal for six of the last nine Presidents of the United States, and only had one complaint from President Bill Clinton, whom did not like the sauce on the salmon but loved the fish. The president sent back the salmon to the kitchen three times because he did not like the sauce. Scott was running out of sauce ideas. Finally, Clinton accepted the fourth offering.
Scott was selected to be on the culinary team that cooked for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sidney, Australia. He was in charge of meats. They prepared 25,000 meals each day for the Olympic athletes and dignitaries. The restaurant was not open to the general public.
While in Australia, Scott was able to participate in a fishing tournament, and caught a 360 lb. shark, which was tagged and released. Scott really enjoyed fishing and hunting in his leisure time over the years.
Scott is survived by his sister Leanne, several aunts and uncles, and many cousins.
