Raymond Anthony "Ray" Salvi

June 10, 1939 - October 30, 2018

Raymond Anthony Salvi passed away peacefully October 30, 2018 in Vancouver, Washington at the age of 79.  A native Oregonian, Ray was born June 10, 1939 to Anthony Salvi and Rose Dindia. Along with his sister Rosalie, Ray grew up in the Colonial Heights and Ladds Addition neighborhoods of southeast Portland.  He attended St Philip Neri Catholic school and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1957. He is a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Germany from 1961-1963. In January of 1966, Ray married the love of his life, Jean, with whom he spent nearly 53 happy years.

As a young man, Ray inherited a single garbage truck and a small route which, over the years and along with several loyal partners, successfully grew in to what is now Portland Disposal & Recycling, the largest privately owned residential garbage company in the city of Portland.

Ray enjoyed getting up early and going to coffee with friends, watching sports, spending time clamming on the Oregon Coast, and he especially enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, Jean, whether in their RV or on cruises. He and Jean spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona where he loved to ride his bike, play cards with friends and create a myriad of projects with stained glass.

Ray is survived by his wife Jean, his three children Tony (Teresa), Tim (Noelle), and Tracy (Chris), 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren as well as his sister Rosalie Williams and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Always a hard worker with a ready smile, Ray definitely enjoyed life and touched many people who will remember him for his kindness, incredible generosity, and his unique sense of humor that never failed to bring a smile to anyone’s face.  He will be missed greatly.

A memorial funeral will be held at St Philip Neri Catholic Church at 11:00 am on Saturday November 17th, 2018. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider a donation in Ray’s honor to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association or the American Spinal Injury Association.
