Pat was born in Tweed Heads, Australia to Patrick John Devery and Lucy McLoughlon on August 9, 1922. He graduated from Armidale Teachers College in Australia and obtained his Masters Degree from Boston University. He had just started his first teaching job in the Outback when World War II broke out. He was drafted into the Australian Army and later transferred to the Navy and spent the war in sonar serving on several destroyers in the Pacific theater. Although teaching was Pat’s career, his innate athletic talents led to the greatest accolades of his life. Pat was considered one of the most outstanding Rugby League players of his time in both Australia and England. As a young man his stellar exploits as a Rugby player led to an offer to play for Balmain in Sydney. When he was selected to represent Australia in the 1946 Test Series with Great Britain he was spotted by several of the English Clubs eager to acquire the best talents Australia had to offer. Soon after he was recruited by Huddersfield in Northern England where he was a member of the team that was dominant in their era from 1947 to 1954. After his playing days, he resumed teaching in Australia and then immigrated to the US, which led to positions in Boston and in Puerto Rico, where he retired as an assistant principal in 1981. He always loved tennis and that became his favorite sport starting in Boston and through the later years of his life. His love of tennis would introduce him to Delores Baldoz, and they married in Puerto Rico in 1976. After Puerto Rico he moved to Washington and then to Portland.
Pat is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jack in Australia. He is survived by his sister, Lucy Clarke of Australia, wife Delores, son, Christopher (Susan) of St Petersburg, FL, daughter, Mandy (Carolyn) of Harwich, MA, daughter Robin (Felipe) Serna, son David of Portland, four granddaughters, Emily Kosoff of Harwich, MA, Kayla Sprint, Isabella and Liliana Serna and a multitude of in-laws, nieces and nephews in both Australia and the US.
