Michael Alan Bach died Thursday, August 23, 2018 at the age of 56 after a short illness. Mike was born April 11, 1962 in Denver, Colorado. Mike and his family moved to Fountain Valley, California eleven years later in 1973. In California, Mike began attending Plavan Elementary School: a highly progressive school that mainstreamed people that experienced disabilities, like Mike, with typical peers. Building on that experience, Mike successfully completed his Bar Mitzvah and Confirmation. Mike continued his education, graduating from Fountain Valley High School in 1980 and then enrolling at Orange Coast College afterward. At OCC, Mike was often seen rolling through campus, talking with friends and faculty, and covering the switchboard to help with lunch breaks.
In 1989, Mike began a new chapter, moving from his childhood home into his own apartment with the help of Project Independence. In that program, Mike met Teri Cone, and they lived together from 1990 until his death. Outside of school and community activities, Mike passionately followed sports, particularly his beloved Denver Broncos (regardless of their performance season-to-season). He frequented Mimi’s, Coco’s, and Starbucks in daily trips to get out, have his coffee, and socialize. He also stayed in touch with family as they moved from California to Oregon, always reaching out on birthdays, for example, with a phone call to check in and chat.
Mike is survived by his parents, Ted and Charlotte (“Charlie”), siblings Kelly, Robert, and Kyle, nephews Gabriel and James, niece Hannah, and family and friends in California, Oregon, and Denver. Mike’s funeral and memorial service will take place in Portland, Oregon, on Sunday, September 2, 2018, and his family thanks everyone for their thoughts.
