Mary Kathryn Baker (MacDonald) April 21, 1927 – May 22, 2018

Mary Kathryn Baker passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 22, 2018, at the age of 91.

Mary was born in Millville Boularderie, Cape Briton, Nova Scotia, Canada on April 21, 1927, to Kenneth Alexander MacDonald and the former Rachel Mae Carson. She was the oldest of their three children.

The family immigrated to the United States in the late 1920s and eventually settled in Redwood City, California. Mary attended Sequoia Union High School where she lettered in sports. She attended Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon and graduated in 1952.

On March 22, 1952, she and James Clinton Baker were married in Redwood City, California but made their home in Portland, Oregon.

After having three children Mary returned to the workforce. She worked at U.S. Bank for 25+ years, retiring as a Trust Operations Officer.

Mary was a member of First Baptist Church (Portland, Oregon) where she taught Sunday school for many years in the nineteen-sixties and early seventies. She was also a Brownie troop leader. With her husband, a member of the Kiwanis Organization she eagerly volunteered and worked on many of the talent shows the local organization put on in nursing facilities around the city.

Mary was an avid reader who loved mysteries and read every Agatha Christie book ever written. She passed on her love of reading to her children and granddaughter. She enjoyed swimming at the YWCA with friends and playing tennis and golf.

She and her husband lived in the Willamette Heights neighborhood of Northwest Portland for over sixty years.  She enjoyed walking around the neighborhood especially in the spring to see the flowers blooming.

After retirement she traveled with her husband and visited Canada, the UK, Europe and Australia as well as various cities around the U.S.

She is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, Jim, her children Leslie, Kelley, and Jamie, and her grand-daughter Fiona as well as her brother Kenneth (Bud) MacDonald of Redwood City. Her brother W. Robert MacDonald passed away in 2007.

Per her request there will be no service or funeral.

As Mary loved dogs her family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Oregon Humane Society (1067 NE Columbia Blvd, Portland, OR 97211 in her name.

Holman’s Funeral Service is handling all arrangements.
