Jane Flaxman, 98, passed away after a brief illness Dec. 19, 2017.
A native Oregonian, Jane saw many changes in the Portland area during her lifetime. She also lived through dramatic changes in technology. Always a learner, she evolved with the change – Facetiming and Facebooking to stay in touch with friends and family.
She worked for many years as a social worker for Jewish Family and Child Service where she counseled many individuals and handled many adoptions.
Jane and her husband Elliott enjoyed spending the post-retirement winters in southern California where they played many rounds of golf. They also enjoyed international travel; Jane traveled to more than 20 countries including China and Mongolia in the early 1980s where she and Elliott stayed in a yurt overnight. There was also domestic travel; she was the only attendee at her 75th Scripps College reunion in 2015.
Jane had more energy than most people half her age. She was an active golfer until the age of 96 and frequently played bridge twice a week. She volunteered for almost 25 years at the Tigard Public Library. Jane is survived by her children, Joan and Bruce (Lorraine); brother, Richard; grandsons, Byron (Tabitha), David (Lindsay), Michael (Kristin) and Gregory (Jessica); six great-grandchildren, Jack, Eleanor, Samuel, Amelia, Tenley and Lucy; and nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elliott; her parents, Milton and Flora Freidenrich; her brother, Robert; and her significant other late in life, Howard Graham. Should you wish to honor Jane with a memorial contribution, the following are suggested: Community Warehouse, Tigard Public Library Foundation or Jewish Family and Child Service.
The family wishes to publicly thank the staff of the Meridian Park Medical Center and her close friends who provided support during her brief illness. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Jan. 3, 2018, at Landau Chapel, Congregation Beth Israel Cemetery.
