James "Jim" Edward Stegmiller

September 17, 1940 - February 7, 2018

Jim was born on September 17, 1940, in Oakland, California. He died peacefully in his home on February 7, 2018, in Portland, Oregon. He is survived by his beloved wife, Teresa Stegmiller, his children, Karen Leeb and her spouse Steve, Colleen Lindsay-Bradley and her spouse Zuma, Gavin Stegmiller and Kaitlyn Stegmiller, his grandson, Stephen Leeb III, his brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Loris Stegmiller, his nieces and nephews, Marilyn Becker, Diane Bartosch, Ken Stegmiller, Mike Stegmiller and their spouses/partners and many other beloved family members and friends including his great nieces and nephews.

Jim graduated high school from Bishop O’Dowd in 1959. He earned his bachelor’s degree in counseling at the University of Montana in 1964. He was a member of the ATO fraternity. After graduation, he began working at Donald E. Long as a counselor for the juvenile court. Shortly after that, he earned his master’s degree from the University of Portland in 1971. After his years spent at the court, he worked with the Casey Foundation on the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative (JDAI), an organization focused on improving the system for juveniles facing detention. And that he did! In his retirement he enjoyed his family, home and garden.

Jim was a person full of fun and humor! He loved his family and his friends. He enjoyed many activities including gardening, camping, reading, boating, movies, travel and cooking. He also loved cats (especially Siamese), SpongeBob SquarePants, Angry Birds, Spam, flamingos, coffee, lights, food, soda and sweets!

He was a loving, bright, lively and articulate person. We love him very much and he will be greatly missed!

The following comes from Jim’s Grace book, given to him by Father John.  It was a very special page for him and he read it to people in the weeks before his passing.

God Hears Our Prayers

“The LORD hears good people when they cry out to him, and he saves them from all their troubles.” ~Psalm 34:17

When [a friend] told Jesus of all of the illness [of Lazarus] he said, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” He dosen’t base his appeal on the imperfect love of the one in need, but on the perfect love of the Savior. He doesn’t say, “The one who loves you is sick.” He says, “The one you love is sick.” The power of the prayer, in other words, does not depend on the one who makes the prayer, but on the one who hears the prayer.

We can and must repeat the phrase in manifold ways. “The one you love is tired, sad, hungry, lonley, fearful, depressed.” The words of the prayer vary, but the response never changes. The Savior hears the prayer. He silences heaven, so he won’t miss a word. He hears the prayer.     ~The Great House of God
