Barbara Jane (Wood) Tyler was born on May 22, 1923 in Portland Oregon, the daughter of Mabel (Poling) Wood and Walter Wood. She passed away on October 3, 2018 in her apartment at Holladay Park Plaza, surrounded by loved ones.
Barbara attended Kennedy Grade School and graduated in 1940 as valedictorian at Jefferson High School, where her father taught. She graduated from Linfield College in 1945. She was active in the speech team and the Christian Students Union, early examples of her life-long interest and involvement in church and school activities, often as a speaker.
Barbara kept in touch with friends from all three schools until the end of her life and loved the times they could gather and catch up in person.
In 1946 she married Hal Tyler. Their parents were friends at the Ladds Addition Evangelical United Brethren Church before they were born, so they knew each other all their lives. Hal and Barbara were married there in 1946. They were married more than 61 years.
The family was active in Ladds Addition and later Laurelhurst United Presbyterian Church. They enjoyed traveling and made many wonderful trips, some with Hal’s brother Ted and his wife Lee. All of her life, Barbara loved times with family, including aunts, uncles and cousins. And she loved telling the stories of those times.
Barbara’s faith was central to who she was. Her unselfishness, commitment to service and her caring helpfulness are an example and an inspiration to all of us who love her and are left to go on without her here.
Barbara is survived by Virginia, David and his wife Lisa. She is also survived by her much-loved grandchildren Krista, Angie, Alissa, Susanne, Rick and John, and their spouses and significant others. She delighted in her great grandchildren and had their pictures and artwork everywhere in her apartment: Emanuel, Gloria, Elena, Josephine, and Logan. She is also survived by scores of friends at Holladay Park Plaza where she and Hal moved in 1995. Throughout her life she loved meeting new people and learning their stories and the Plaza gave her abundant opportunities for both. She will long be remembered by her friends at the coffee bar. And she touched the lives of many others, who each have their own favorite “Barbara stories.”
She is now reunited in heaven with all the loved ones she so missed – especially her “beloved Hal”, her parents, and other family too numerous to list here but who she eagerly anticipated seeing again.
The family is grateful for the love and care of the staff at Holladay Park Plaza who brightened her days for decades and who provided tender support and assistance when she needed a little more help. We will always remember your kindness.
Celebration of life at 2:00 pm Saturday, October 27th at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Portland, 11801 SE Mt Scott Blvd, Portland, OR 97086. No flowers please. Memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
