Dr. Alfred “Al” Furie, 87, of Hillsboro, passed away January 11, 2018. Dr. Furie was born to Leah Glicksman and S. Furie, July 21, 1930, on the Lower East Side in New York City. He graduated in 1952 from Delaware Valley College, receiving his baccalaureate degree in Animal Husbandry.
In 1960, he earned a Doctorate of Optometry from Pacific University and soon settled in Hillsboro where he practiced optometry for 48 years. Concurrently, he was an Associate Professor in the University’s College of Optometry. To this day, many of his students remember him as a caring and knowledgeable mentor. Dr. Furie served in the United States Air Force for four years.
Dr. Furie was also dedicated to community service and proudly served as a member of the Hillsboro Kiwanis club for 48 years. Every July 4th, he could be seen at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast happily flipping hundreds of pancakes at the city’s annual celebration.
Dr. Furie was awarded the “Achievement Award in Science” in 2006 from the Delaware Valley College Alumni Association. Additionally, in 2008 he was awarded the “Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award” from The Alumni Association of Pacific University.
Dr. Furie, a beloved optometrist who was passionate about each patient’s care, treated generations of families. He loved hiking, walking and bicycling and was known by all for the beautiful garden he cultivated for decades, using no artificial pesticides or fertilizers.
Dr. Furie and his wife, Carole Ellen Rosenberg, were married in Portland in 1960 and lived in Hillsboro for 57 years.
He is survived by his wife Carole, his three daughters: JoAnn Eden of Portland, Linda Furie of Hillsboro and Betty Paulsen of Los Angeles; son-in-law Dennis Paulsen; and grandsons Christopher Eden of Portland and Anthony Eden of Boston.
Dr. Furie will forever be remembered for his kind and gentle disposition, his love for his family, and his beautiful smile.
A remembrance will be held at Congregation Neveh Shalom, 2900 SW Peaceful Lane, Portland; 3pm Tuesday, January 16.
